US Expands Statin Eligibility to 21.5 Million Adults in New ACC/AHA Guidelines

The 2026 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) dyslipidemia guidelines lower cardiovascular risk thresholds and introduce the PREVENT risk calculator, shifting emphasis to lifelong primary‑prevention beginning at age 30. The new framework recommends statin therapy for non‑pregnant adults aged 30‑79.

Analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2017‑2023) estimates that 87.5 million U.S. adults – about 56.6 % of the population in that age range – are now eligible for statins. Of these, 21.5 million (13.9 %) are newly eligible, largely younger individuals with lower short‑term risk (average 10‑year ASCVD risk 3.1 % versus 6.1 % for previously recommended patients). The expansion could markedly broaden primary‑prevention efforts across the United States.
