US federal budget deficit hits record $432 billion in July
The U.S. federal budget deficit for July reached a record $432 billion, driven by increased outlays and negative tariff revenues. According to the U.S. Treasury, unadjusted outlays for the month hit a record $766 billion. The fiscal year-to-date deficit for 2026 has already reached $1.799 trillion, surpassing the total deficit for the full fiscal year 2025 with two months remaining.
Adding to the fiscal pressure, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has revised its fiscal 2026 deficit projection upward to $2.1 trillion, up from a previous estimate of $1.9 trillion. This increase is largely attributed to a significant drop in tariff and customs-duty collections, which are expected to be $250 billion below earlier projections. This revenue shortfall follows a Supreme Court ruling that found the administration lacked the authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
While stronger-than-expected income and payroll tax collections have provided some cushion, the net revenue gap remains substantial. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget noted that the country is on track to surpass $2 trillion in borrowing this fiscal year despite the absence of a recession.
