U.S. Fiber Broadband Push Gains Policy Backing and Deployment Milestones

The Fiber Broadband Association released a policy paper titled “U.S. Broadband Policy’s North Star: Fiber is the Key to Closing the Digital Divide.” The paper urges federal and state policymakers to prioritize long‑term, high‑performance fiber infrastructure to support AI‑driven workloads, cloud computing, and data‑center growth. It recommends accelerating permitting, investing in middle‑mile/backhaul capacity, pairing deployment with affordability programs, and improving data mapping to close connectivity gaps.

At the same time, several operators are expanding fiber networks across the United States. Brightspeed announced that it has completed about 30 % of its planned Wisconsin fiber rollout, delivering service to more than 67,000 homes and businesses and targeting an additional 146,000 locations. The effort is funded by roughly $138.3 million from the federal BEAD program and $4.2 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. Other providers such as Archtop Fiber, Comcast, Empire Fiber and others are also constructing multi‑gigabit fiber in New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states, further extending high‑speed broadband access to rural and suburban communities.
