Global Forest Fires Drive Record Emissions, US, Canada, Portugal See Surge
Copernicus satellite monitoring shows that in early August fire emissions were far above normal in 13 regions worldwide, with the United States leading the anomaly. U.S. fires emitted an average of 878,000 tonnes of carbon per day, about 180 % higher than the 23‑year average, and Washington, Oregon and Utah recorded the most extreme values. Europe experienced a 787 % jump in July emissions, while Canada’s fires contributed 2.48 million tonnes of carbon per day, 134 % above the average.
In the United States the National Interagency Fire Center kept its highest alert level (level 5), reporting 94 large fires and 97 new fires across the country in early August, forcing thousands of evacuations. Portugal’s Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) reported that less than 1 % of the fires caused 81 % of the burned area from January to July 2026. Five major fires in Valpaços, Vouzela, Guarda, Chaves and Alijó accounted for most of the 43,573 hectares burned, out of a total of 5,755 rural fires that scorched 53,731 hectares.
A World Weather Attribution study linked the extreme fire season in Canada to climate change, finding that a 1.4 °C rise in global temperature doubled the likelihood of the hot‑dry conditions that fueled the nearly 700 active fires burning more than 3.8 million hectares, with over 4,000 fire starts recorded. The World Meteorological Organization warned that climate change amplifies fire risk but is not the sole cause, noting the combined impact of extreme weather, fuel buildup and human ignitions on fire severity and smoke dispersion.
