U.S. funds Nebraska SMR project and seeks private access to surplus plutonium

The U.S. Department of Energy awarded US$27.8 million to the Nebraska Public Power District to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) that promise quicker construction, lower costs and 24‑hour power generation. The funding is part of a broader federal program aimed at expanding advanced nuclear capacity to meet growing industrial and AI‑driven electricity demand.

Separately, the DOE announced advanced negotiations with five private companies—including Oklo Inc.—to allow access to excess weapons‑grade plutonium for use as fuel in next‑generation reactors. Officials say the program could unlock new private financing, boost fuel supply and accelerate reactor deployment, while some lawmakers warn it may increase nuclear‑proliferation risks.
