US government bond returns see largest decline since 1803
The total return on United States government bonds has experienced a significant decline over the past decade, marking the most substantial drop since 1803, according to data from Bianco Research.
Investors face a complex landscape as American national debt rises. The profitability of bond investments depends on both interest payments and changes in market price. Generally, when required yields rise, the market price of existing bonds falls. Conversely, if an investor purchases a bond with a high yield and market interest rates subsequently decrease, the bond's market value increases, potentially offering returns beyond the regular interest rate.
Currently, ten-year US Treasury bonds have seen yields reaching approximately 5.3 percent, a level comparable to recent quarterly highs. An investor holding such a bond to maturity would receive the promised payments, resulting in an annual dollar-denominated return of roughly 5.3 percent, provided the US government meets its obligations.
