US government escalates AI oversight amid Anthropic dispute and new Trump decree

Tensions between the United States government and artificial‑intelligence firm Anthropic have eased slightly after the company’s chief executive visited the White House, but the dispute remains unresolved. Anthropic, which is preparing for an initial public offering, was placed on a national‑security blacklist earlier this year after refusing to let the U.S. military use its models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The Department of Defense later labeled the firm a supply‑chain risk, restricting its AI from being used by defense contractors. Anthropic is contesting the designation in court.

Separately, a new decree signed by President Donald Trump creates a pre‑release review process for advanced AI models. The rule lets the government request early access to systems from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic, aiming to assess security, cyber‑infrastructure and potential strategic threats. The measure does not block releases but adds a voluntary evaluation step before public deployment.
