U.S. Government funded through December 11 via continuing resolution

President Trump has signed a continuing resolution that extends federal government funding from the start of the 2027 fiscal year on October 1 through December 11, 2026. While this provides a temporary reprieve, Congress has only passed two of the twelve required appropriations bills, and a full budget has not been completed by the October 1 deadline since 1997.

Concerns regarding potential shutdowns highlight the risk to federal employees' credit scores. Although federal law guarantees back pay after a funding gap ends, AFGE President Everett Kelley noted that back pay does not undo the damage caused by late payments reported to credit agencies during the lapse. The Federal Worker Credit Protection Act of 2026 has been introduced in the Senate to address this issue by preventing agencies from recording adverse credit information during shutdowns.

In related developments, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is proposing incentives for homelessness reduction strategies that deviate from the ‘Housing First’ approach. Additionally, four unions have filed a lawsuit to block a reorganization within the Department of Agriculture (USDA).
