US Government Issues New AI Security Executive Order and National Security Memorandum

On June 2, 2026 the White House signed an Executive Order titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security.” The order directs all federal agencies to harden their information systems with AI‑enabled cyber defenses within 30 days and mandates the Treasury, NSA, CISA and other officials to establish an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse that will collect and remediate software vulnerabilities, including those in frontier AI models. The order also calls for a classified benchmarking process to assess AI capabilities in collaboration with AI developers.

Five days later, on June 6, 2026 President Donald Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum that accelerates AI adoption across the U.S. military and intelligence community. The memorandum sets four pillars—adoption, adaptation, assurance and accountability—requires faster deployment of advanced AI systems, creates an AI National Security Strategic Reserve of non‑government experts, and orders the Secretary of War to issue new guidance on autonomous weapon systems within 90 days. It also rescinds the previous NSM‑25 framework and emphasizes that AI use must respect civil liberties and privacy.

Both directives aim to strengthen U.S. national security by integrating advanced AI technologies while establishing oversight, security standards, and collaboration with the private sector.
