US health agencies investigate multi-state foodborne illness outbreaks

U.S. health agencies are investigating widespread foodborne illnesses linked to lettuce, meat, poultry, eggs, and fresh produce across multiple states. Dr. J Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), noted that the outbreak of Cyclospora linked to iceberg lettuce from Mexico has been larger than in typical years, spreading across 15 states and resulting in two deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are working with suppliers to trace infection sources and initiate product recalls to prevent further spread. In addition to the Cyclospora outbreak, the Department of Agriculture has issued alerts regarding potential Salmonella contamination in meat and poultry products.

Further concerns include possible Salmonella infections involving jalapeños across 27 states, as well as potential contamination in cilantro, red onions, and avocados. Authorities are also investigating Salmonella risks in eggs in Texas, while screwworm infestations have reportedly impacted beef supplies.
