US home builder sentiment rises slightly in August amid persistent economic weakness
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rose one point to 35 in August, exceeding economist forecasts of a decline to 33. Despite this slight uptick, builder confidence remains weak, marking the 16th consecutive month the index has stayed below 40.
Construction firms are facing significant headwinds, including high mortgage rates, economic uncertainty, and rising material costs. Increased prices for gasoline and diesel, driven by global energy market disruptions, have contributed to higher expenses for construction equipment and materials.
While current sales of single-family homes reached their highest level since May, measures for future sales and prospective buyer foot traffic remained unchanged. Additionally, 35% of builders reported cutting prices in August to support demand, with an average price reduction of 6%.
