US hospitals see surge in cannabis hyperemesis syndrome cases

A new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report shows that emergency‑room diagnoses of cannabis hyperemesis syndrome rose 16% between October and May, after a dedicated diagnosis code was introduced last fall. The analysis of data from roughly 7,500 facilities recorded almost 200,000 related visits from January 2023 through mid‑2025.

The sharpest increases were observed among people aged 15‑24, especially teenage girls and women, as well as Black Americans and American Indian and Alaska Native patients. CDC researcher Alana Vivolo‑Kantor said the findings highlight a need for greater awareness of the condition in teens and young adults and call for further research into its causes and treatment.
