Rising cannabis-related health issues in the United States

Overview

Recent data from the United States indicates a rise in cannabis-related health issues, specifically regarding cannabis use disorder and Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS).

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report noted a 16% increase in emergency-room diagnoses of CHS between October and May, following the introduction of a dedicated diagnosis code. Analysis of data from approximately 7,500 facilities recorded nearly 200,000 related visits between January 2023 and mid-2025. The sharpest increases occurred among individuals aged 15–24, particularly teenage girls, women, Black Americans, and American Indian and Alaska Native patients.

Further studies published in JAMA Psychiatry show that cannabis use disorder increased between 2021 and 2024, rising from 7.3% to 9.3% among men and from 4.5% to 5.6% among women. CHS, colloquially known as ‘scromiting,’ is characterized by severe nausea, stomach pain, and uncontrollable vomiting. In response to these trends, some experts suggest addressing problematic use through education rather than prohibition.
