U.S. House passes legislation on data center electricity costs

The United States House of Representatives has passed legislation regarding the regulation of large-scale data centers. The bill, which passed with a 417-3 vote, requires state regulators to consider mandates ensuring that data centers consuming significant amounts of electricity cover the full costs of additional power generation, as well as necessary transmission and distribution upgrades.

Despite the broad bipartisan support in the House, the issue remains a political flashpoint. Senate Democrats recently blocked an AI data center bill, and debate continues over whether state and local governments should have the authority to restrict, ban, or regulate the size and function of these facilities. Critics and proponents are divided on how to address concerns regarding energy affordability, the rise of artificial intelligence, and the impact of corporate influence on government infrastructure.
