US data center expansion and public opposition

Public opposition to the expansion of data centers in the United States is increasing. A Gallup poll indicates that 70% of Americans oppose the installation of these facilities in their communities, a level of resistance that exceeds opposition to nuclear power plants. Primary concerns include increased pressure on water resources, noise, land use, air pollution, and rising utility bills.

To support power demands, approximately 74 new gas-burning power plants are being proposed or built. In Pennsylvania, carbon emissions from seven such plants would equal the annual emissions of 15 million gasoline-burning cars. Additionally, the use of diesel backup generators has nearly tripled between 2018 and 2024.

In Ohio, political leaders and residents have held rallies to protest rapid data center growth. Residents in Bowling Green have reported significant increases in electricity costs, while state and local representatives have warned of the implications of unrestricted expansion. These discussions have also touched upon potential conflicts of interest regarding gubernatorial candidates with financial ties to major technology companies.
