U.S. House passes resolution condemning socialism

The U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 1490, which condemns socialism “in all its forms,” specifically naming the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The resolution passed with a 220-192 vote, supported by all Republicans and eight Democrats, including representatives from Florida, Texas, Maine, Washington, and New Mexico.

Republican sponsors, including Rep. Jeff Crank, linked the resolution to the SAVE America Act, which seeks to require proof of citizenship for federal voting. House Republicans framed the vote as a response to the rising influence of DSA-aligned candidates in Democratic primaries. Conversely, Democratic leadership, including Hakeem Jeffries and Pete Aguilar, criticized the measure as a political maneuver, noting that they had attempted to pass a separate resolution condemning socialism without the attached election security legislation.

The vote has caused internal friction within the Democratic Party. Two Democratic representatives, Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, faced criticism from party leadership for voting to advance the procedural rule that allowed the resolution to proceed. Golden stated his support was intended to facilitate the passage of a separate lobstering regulation bill. The ideological divide highlights growing tensions between the Democratic establishment and the progressive left ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
