U.S. House resolution on socialism and DSA

The U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 1490, which condemns socialism ‘in all its forms’ and specifically targets the policy platform of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Introduced by Representative Jeff Crank (R-CO), the measure passed with a vote of 220 in favor and 192 against.

The resolution links socialist ideology to historical totalitarianism, mass killings, and famines. It also reaffirms support for ‘free, fair and secure elections,’ asserting that American elections are exclusively for U.S. citizens. To this end, the text calls for the enactment of the SAVE America Act to enhance election security and prevent non-citizens from voting.

The vote included eight Democrats who joined Republicans in support: Kathy Castor, Henry Cuellar, Don Davis, Jared Golden, Vicente Gonzalez, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Darren Soto, and Gabe Vasquez. Two additional Democrats voted ‘present.’ Conversely, five Republicans—Andy Harris, Clay Higgins, Ralph Norman, Chip Roy, and Pete Sessions—initially voted against the procedural rule to bring the measure to the floor, citing protests against Republican leadership, though they later affirmed the resolution itself.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Pete Aguilar (D-CA) opposed the measure, characterizing the inclusion of the SAVE Act as ‘toxic voter suppression legislation.’ Democratic leadership further criticized the support of members such as Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, describing their support for the procedural rule as a ‘significant breach of trust.’ Leadership noted they had attempted to pass a separate resolution condemning socialism without the attached election security legislation. Representative Golden defended his support by stating it was tied to advancing a specific lobstering regulation bill for his constituents. The vote highlights growing ideological tensions between the Democratic establishment and the progressive left ahead of upcoming midterm elections.
