US ICE Expansion Sparks UN Criticism Over Migrant Deaths

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased its budget and hired additional agents, intensifying enforcement actions against undocumented migrants. The agency’s expanded operations have coincided with a rise in reported deaths and abuse claims in detention facilities.

The United Nations has pressed Washington to uphold the rule of law after a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Houston. UN Deputy Secretary‑General Amina Mohammed warned that the United States must protect human dignity and due process, while UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for stronger independent oversight of detention centers. Mexico has also escalated its legal response to the deaths of its citizens in ICE custody.

Human‑rights groups and migrant advocates argue that the heightened enforcement threatens community trust and demands greater transparency and accountability within ICE.
