US influence in Middle East declining, Foreign Affairs reports

An analysis published in Foreign Affairs suggests that the era of United States dominance in the Middle East is ending, marking a shift in the global order. The report argues that the regional order established in 1991 has been undermined by the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

The publication notes that the inability of the US and Israel to overthrow the Iranian regime demonstrates the failure of decades of sanctions and violence. Furthermore, the US's perceived failure to protect Persian Gulf allies from Iranian attacks or to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz has weakened the security justifications for maintaining American military bases in the region.

The analysis also highlights that Israel's increasingly aggressive stance and refusal to compromise with Palestinians have disrupted long-standing US efforts to build security partnerships between Arab allies and Israel. It characterizes the military strategies employed, including those under Donald Trump, as overestimations of American military capability and underestimations of Iranian adaptability.
