US intensifies efforts to rescue Lebanon-Israel framework agreement

The United States is intensifying efforts to prevent the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel from reaching a deadlock. Diplomatic pressure is mounting on Israel to move beyond stalling tactics and commit to the negotiation process, particularly as military operations continue in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently approved the release of five Lebanese prisoners, a move seen as a signal to Washington and Beirut that Israel remains engaged in negotiations despite ongoing military activity. However, tensions remain high as Israeli forces claim operational control over specific areas, including the Ali al-Tahir heights, following operations targeting Hezbollah tunnels and infrastructure.

Upcoming negotiations in Rome are expected to focus on expanding pilot projects that allow the Lebanese army to deploy in specific southern areas, such as West Zotir. While Israel seeks to solidify its control over a 10-kilometer buffer zone before expanding these projects, US officials are working to maintain momentum to ensure the framework agreement does not collapse due to military escalations or procedural delays.
