US-Iran Agreement to Halt Israeli Attacks on Lebanon Gains Lebanese Leaders' Support

The United States and Iran have reached a historic accord that includes a binding provision obligating Israel to cease all attacks on Lebanon. Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nebih Berri said the clause "protects Lebanon's sovereignty on all its territory" and does not conflict with the country's independent decision‑making. He thanked Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt for their roles in the deal and praised both the U.S. and Iranian governments for the agreement.

Lebanese President Joseph Avn welcomed the accord, stating that it respects Lebanon's special situation and provides essential elements for a permanent cease‑fire and stability in the region. He expressed hope that the agreement will safeguard the rights of states and peoples.

Despite the agreement, Israel's defence minister Yisrael Katz announced that the Israeli army will continue to hold its positions in the occupied areas of southern Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip, signalling that the cease‑fire clause has not yet altered Israeli military posture.
