US-Iran conflict escalates as ceasefire collapses

The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has escalated following military strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian officials. While a framework agreement for a ceasefire was reached in mid-June, President Donald Trump declared the truce over in early July following renewed attacks from both sides.

The war has had significant regional impacts, including Iranian counterattacks against Israel, Gulf states, and US military bases, as well as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected global oil trade. Hezbollah, supported by Iran, has also engaged in hostilities against Israel.

The Pentagon reports that munitions costs reached approximately five billion dollars in the first two days of combat, with total costs exceeding eleven billion dollars within the first six days. The administration is expected to request a supplemental budget of up to fifty billion dollars from Congress to address these expenditures, a move that is expected to face significant political opposition.
