US-Iran conflict reaches stalemate amid Strait of Hormuz blockade

Six months after the initial joint US and Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities on February 28, 2026, the conflict has reached a state of mutual attrition and stalemate. While a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire took effect on April 8, naval confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz have persisted.

The military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has significantly disrupted global energy markets. Before the conflict, the waterway handled approximately 20% of the world's crude oil; following the blockade, cargo vessel traffic has plummeted. This disruption has triggered rising oil prices and inflationary pressures affecting economies in Europe, China, and India.

In response to ongoing US naval blockades, Iran has announced plans to establish a new restricted zone extending into the Persian Gulf. Iranian officials warned that vessels entering this perimeter will face sanctions from Tehran. Meanwhile, the conflict continues to impact regional stability, with ongoing Israeli military actions in Lebanon and Gaza.
