Strait of Hormuz control tensions rise amid US-Iran stalemate

The conflict between the United States and Iran has reached a tense stalemate following the expiration of a Memorandum of Understanding on August 17, 2026. While U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted intentions to declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory after defeating Iran, Iranian officials have rejected these claims.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that the vital oil-shipping route will remain under Iranian command and that the country will continue to enforce blockades. Similarly, Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, maintained that the strait is an inseparable part of Iran.

Economically, the situation remains volatile. Abdul Nasser Hemmati, President of Iran’s Central Bank, confirmed that Iranian oil exports have ceased. This follows earlier military strikes by the U.S. and Israel in February 2026, which caused a surge in commercial tanker insurance premiums and increased global crude oil prices. Despite U.S. military efforts to damage Iran’s command-and-control infrastructure, the strategic outcome remains undecided as both nations maintain hardline positions.
