US-Iran conflict: Sovereignty disputes over Strait of Hormuz
Overview
The military and geopolitical conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a new phase of escalation following the expiration of a Memorandum of Understanding on August 17, 2026. While the strategic stalemate established after the February 2026 precision strikes remains, tensions regarding maritime sovereignty have intensified.
U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted intentions to declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory following a defeat of Iran, a claim Iranian officials have categorically rejected. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that the vital oil-shipping route will remain under Iranian command and that the country will continue to enforce blockades. Additionally, Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, maintained that the strait is an “inseparable part of Iran.”
The economic consequences of the standoff have deepened. Abdul Nasser Hemmati, President of Iran’s Central Bank, confirmed that Iranian oil exports have ceased. This follows the earlier volatility in crude oil prices and rising commercial tanker insurance premiums triggered by the February strikes. Despite U.S. and Israeli efforts to degrade Iran’s command-and-control infrastructure, the strategic outcome remains undecided as both nations maintain hardline positions.
