US-Iran Hormuz Agreement Shapes G7 Talks in Evian, France

The United States and Iran announced an agreement to lift the U.S. blockade and reopen the Strait of Hormuz just before the opening of the G7 summit in Evian, France. The deal, mediated by Pakistan, is set to be signed in Geneva on 19 June and could lead to the easing of sanctions on Tehran.

President Donald Trump arrived at the summit on Air Force One, meeting French President Emmanuel Macron in a bilateral discussion before joining the G7 leaders for dinner. Macron said the agreement must be examined for its long‑term impact, citing support for Lebanon, nuclear and ballistic issues, and the need for ongoing security measures in the strait. He noted that French and British navies, with the carrier Charles‑de‑Gaulle deployed, stand ready to secure and de‑mine the Hormuz corridor.

The announcement shifts the dynamics of the Evian meeting, with European leaders acknowledging the new context while continuing to address other agenda items, including climate policy, which Trump reportedly dismisses.
