US-Iran tensions drive oil price surge and regional security warnings
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated, causing significant volatility in global energy markets. Following reports that the U.S. is deploying a third carrier strike group to the Middle East, crude oil prices surged. Brent crude rose by 4.4% to $102.31 per barrel.
In response to perceived military and economic pressure from Washington, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued a stern warning. He stated that if Iran's security is not guaranteed, “no infrastructure in the region will be safe.” Qalibaf specifically noted that if Iran is prevented from selling its oil, “no one in the region” will be able to sell oil either.
The confrontation centers on control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and gas trade passes. While Washington insists the strait must remain open for international navigation, Tehran views U.S. actions as attempts to force concessions through military and economic coercion.
