US-Iran tensions escalate amid maritime attacks and leadership warnings

Despite Vance’s characterization, the US and Iran exchanged attacks for three consecutive days this week, specifically in the Strait of Hormuz, where the US military recently struck nearly 60 military targets.

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned that the administration risks entering another ‘infinite war’ in the Middle East, drawing parallels to previous conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Panetta suggested the standoff could continue for at least another six months and expressed concern that internal chaos within the Pentagon and the chain of command may signal weakness to adversaries such as Iran, China, and Russia.
