US-Iran tensions escalate amid military strikes and new sanctions

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated following a series of military strikes and economic measures. President Donald Trump claimed on social media that Iran’s Kharg Island energy hub was being ‘blown to smithereens,’ though the accompanying video appeared to be AI-generated and there was no immediate official confirmation of an attack on the facility. Kharg Island is a critical site that has historically handled 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

Recent hostilities include U.S. strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, which Iran responded to by targeting two U.S. military bases in Jordan with ballistic missiles. While Jordan reported intercepting eight of these missiles, the exchange marks a significant return to direct conflict. President Trump has warned that further Iranian retaliation would trigger ‘much harder and higher’ attacks.

In addition to military action, the U.S. is intensifying economic pressure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that new secondary sanctions are likely to be unveiled weekly, initially targeting banks to prevent them from aiding the Iranian regime. This follows recent penalties imposed on branches of Egypt’s Banque Misr in the United Arab Emirates.
