US-Iran tensions escalate over maritime security and nuclear concerns
The Hoover Institution has identified several factors contributing to Iran's ability to withstand United States military and economic pressure. Key elements include Tehran's strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, which creates global financial anxiety, and the development of sophisticated networks to bypass international sanctions. Additionally, the institution noted the cohesion of Iran's armed forces, sufficient missile and drone capabilities, and an oil-based economy that maintains regional trade despite restrictions.
Separately, U.S. Representative to the United Nations Mike Waltz characterized recent Iranian proposals as “hypocritical,” claiming they were designed to be unacceptable to the Trump administration. Waltz emphasized that the United States maintains all options on the table to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, citing multiple UN Security Council resolutions that prohibit such a program. He also condemned Iran's attacks on international commercial vessels, noting that 146 countries have joined the U.S. in condemning these violations of international law.
