United States issues AI executive order to boost innovation and national security

The White House issued an executive order titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security” on 2 June 2026. The order designates artificial intelligence as a strategic national‑security infrastructure and seeks to balance rapid innovation with protective measures. It creates an “AI Cybersecurity Clearinghouse” to coordinate vulnerability information across federal agencies and the private sector, and it encourages voluntary sharing of advanced “frontier” AI models with the government up to 30 days before public release for safety testing. The order prioritises cyber‑defence for critical sectors—including energy, health, finance and telecommunications—and strengthens AI use within federal and local public‑administration systems while expanding technical expertise and training programmes. No mandatory licensing regime is introduced; rather, the policy relies on cooperation with industry to safeguard AI development without stifling commercial progress.
