U.S. job openings fall to 7.08 million in August

U.S. job openings fell to approximately 7.08 million in August, down from a revised 7.34 million in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). This figure fell below market expectations and represents the lowest level of openings since March.

Sector-specific data showed a significant plunge in real estate, rental, and leasing job openings, which dropped to 50,000 in August. Construction sector openings also declined to 251,000, though this remains higher than the previous year. Conversely, the manufacturing sector saw a rise in hiring, and the information sector showed an unexpected increase in job openings.

Despite the decline in vacancies, the broader labor market showed signs of resilience. Layoffs and discharges decreased by 61,000 to 1.641 million, and the number of people voluntarily quitting their jobs remained stable at approximately 3.1 million. The job openings rate declined to 4.3 percent from 4.4 percent in July. Forecasters suggest the unemployment rate likely held steady at 4.1 percent.
