The United States kept initial unemployment benefit claims near historic lows, with weekly applications rising modestly to 197,000 in early May — still the lowest level in more than five decades but higher than the 187,000 recorded for the week ending July 24, 2026. April added 175,000 jobs, extending a 40‑month streak of job creation yet falling short of expectations, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 3.9% from 3.8%. Wage growth slowed to 3.9% year‑over‑year, down from 4.1% the month before, while gains were spread across healthcare, social assistance, transportation, warehousing, manufacturing and construction.

The Labor Department reported 1.5% GDP growth for the April‑June quarter and a PCE inflation rate of 3.7%, above the Fed’s 2% target. Higher oil prices linked to the U.S.–Iran conflict added consumer pressure, but layoffs remained historically low. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank needs greater confidence that inflation is moderating before considering rate cuts, noting the policy rate remains at a 20‑year high.

The earlier record of ultra‑low claims and the concurrent surge in South Korea’s AI‑driven chip sector continue to shape expectations that the Fed can focus on inflation even as labor‑market indicators begin to cool.
