US jobless claims fall to 203,000 as layoffs remain low

U.S. initial jobless claims fell to 203,000 for the week ending August 22, down from a revised 207,000 the previous week. This figure was lower than the consensus estimate of 209,000, indicating that layoffs remain contained despite a cooling in broader labor demand.

Continuing claims also saw an improvement, dropping from a revised 1.796 million to 1.778 million. However, the four-week average of initial claims rose slightly from 204,250 to 205,500, suggesting the underlying trend is somewhat firmer than the weekly decline alone indicates.

The current labor market is characterized by a “no hire, no fire” environment. While companies appear reluctant to shed staff due to previous worker shortages, hiring momentum has also slowed. The U.S. unemployment rate currently stands at 4.1%.
