U.S. Judge Dismisses California Charges Against Sinaloa Cartel Leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada

Federal judge Dana Sabraw in California dismissed the criminal charges against Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada after a Brooklyn federal court sentenced him to life imprisonment for drug trafficking and leadership of a criminal enterprise. The dismissal reflects the Justice Department’s decision to concentrate prosecution in New York, where Zambada was already convicted, ordered to forfeit $15 billion, and imprisoned in a federal medical facility. The resolution does not alter his custody status.

Zambada, the founding leader of the Sinaloa Cartel captured in July 2024, sent a handwritten letter to his family apologizing and urging them to stay away from criminal activity. Analysts say the life sentence may weaken the Zambada family’s influence within the cartel, but the organization remains one of the world’s most powerful drug‑trafficking groups.
