U.S. Justice Department submits unredacted Epstein files to Judge Emmet Sullivan

On July 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice delivered unredacted copies of disputed Epstein‑related records to U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan, meeting the judge’s deadline. The production covers the eight email chains at the centre of journalist Katie Phang’s lawsuit and two additional documents.

The DOJ provided justification for ten redactions, citing the protection of victims’ identities, personal information, and law‑enforcement personnel, including an assistant U.S. attorney’s name. It also acknowledged an inadvertent redaction of Jeffrey Epstein’s own email address and has since corrected that mistake.

The documents will be reviewed “in camera,” meaning only Judge Sullivan will examine them privately. The judge will decide whether the DOJ’s explanations satisfy the court order, while the department has indicated it will appeal the underlying order regardless of the review outcome.
