U.S. labor market shows low unemployment claims amid slowing job growth
New data from the Labor Department reveals a divergence in the United States labor market. Initial unemployment claims fell to 194,000 for the week ending Saturday, approaching levels not seen in nearly six decades. This suggests that businesses are largely retaining existing staff rather than conducting widespread layoffs.
However, employment growth has slowed significantly. Nonfarm payrolls increased by only 29,000 in September, a notable decrease from the monthly average of 45,000 seen over the preceding 12 months. The unemployment rate currently stands at 4.2%.
These conflicting signals arrive as Federal Reserve officials prepare for a monetary policy meeting to consider interest rate decisions. The central bank must weigh persistent inflation against evidence of weakening demand for new workers.
