US troops killed in Iranian attack on Jordan base, prompting new US strikes
Two United States service members were killed and a third is missing after Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones at a U.S.‑operated base in Jordan on July 17. Four other American personnel were injured but have been released from Jordanian hospitals. The U.S. Central Command confirmed the casualties and said identities would be withheld until families are notified, bringing the total U.S. deaths in the Iran‑U.S. war to 16.
President Donald Trump ordered a fresh round of U.S. airstrikes, marking the eighth consecutive night of attacks on Iranian targets. CENTCOM said the strikes hit Iranian coastal‑surveillance sites, air‑defence installations, missile‑ and drone‑storage facilities and bridges in the Hormozgan region, aiming to degrade the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to "swiftly punish" the forces responsible for the Jordan attack. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned of "unforgettable lessons" and announced that Tehran had suspended the cease‑fire memorandum with the United States.
