US service members killed in Jordan as Iranian missile‑drone attack sparks renewed US strikes

Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, killing two U.S. service members and leaving a third missing; four others were injured and later discharged from Jordanian hospitals. The attack marked the first U.S. fatalities since the cease‑fire collapsed in early July, bringing the total U.S. deaths in the February‑started war to 16 and the wounded count to more than 420.

President Donald Trump ordered a fresh round of airstrikes, the eighth consecutive night of U.S. attacks on Iran. Central Command said the strikes targeted Iranian coastal surveillance, air‑defence and maritime assets, including sites near Sirik and Qeshm Island, to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to swiftly punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the Jordan attack. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes on U.S.‑linked facilities in Kuwait and elsewhere in the Gulf.

The escalation underscores the widening U.S.–Iran conflict, with Jordan becoming a focal point for U.S. forces in the region.
