US law enforcement ramps up patrols for Labor Day weekend

Law enforcement agencies in Georgia and North Carolina are increasing patrols and launching safety campaigns ahead of the Labor Day holiday weekend to combat impaired driving and unsafe road behavior.

In Georgia, the Department of Public Safety announced that State Patrol and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers will conduct high-visibility patrols on interstates and secondary roads. The 78-hour travel period begins Friday, Sept. 4, at 6:00 p.m. and concludes Monday, Sept. 7, at 11:59 p.m. Officials are focusing on speeding, seatbelt violations, and distracted driving, noting that during the 2025 holiday period, troopers investigated 359 crashes resulting in 10 fatalities.

In North Carolina, the “Booze It & Lose It” campaign has launched in Fayetteville to discourage drinking and driving. To support enforcement, six Breath Alcohol Testing Mobiles (BATMobiles) will be deployed across the state from Aug. 31 through Sept. 13. Fayetteville Police Chief Roberto Bryan Jr. emphasized that collisions caused by impaired driving are “100% preventable.”
