U.S. lawmakers debate data center energy costs and regulations
The U.S. Senate recently blocked the Ratepayer Protection Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation that passed the House of Representatives with a 417-3 vote. The act aimed to hold large data centers responsible for the full costs of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution upgrades required to support their energy loads, preventing those costs from being passed to average households.
In addition to federal gridlock, several states are implementing their own restrictions on data center development. Virginia has introduced aggressive standards for facilities exceeding 25 MW, including limitations on natural gas use. Pennsylvania has signed standards targeting speculative projects, and New York has implemented a one-year moratorium on massive data center developments to address community concerns.
