U.S. lawmakers propose sanctions against Serbian President Vučić
U.S. Representatives Joe Wilson and Bill Keating have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at increasing pressure on Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. The legislation proposes sanctions and visa bans for individuals deemed to be undermining democratic processes, peace, stability, and territorial integrity in the Western Balkans.
The initiative follows significant domestic unrest in Serbia, including protests against corruption and government mismanagement that intensified after a tragic canopy collapse at a Novi Sad railway station in November 2024. The bill specifically mentions Vučić and expresses concern regarding the use of force against protesters.
Additionally, the lawmakers are calling for investigations into the Novi Sad tragedy and urging Belgrade to limit the influence of Russia, China, and Iran. While the U.S. maintains an interest in a stable and democratic Serbia anchored in Euro-Atlantic institutions, the legislative move marks a shift in tone compared to previous diplomatic relations.
