Strait of Hormuz standoff: Iran sets strict conditions for reopening
The standoff over the Strait of Hormuz has intensified as Iran and the United States remain deadlocked over maritime security and economic concessions. While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that negotiations with Oman regarding a new shipping route are in the ‘final stages,’ Tehran has maintained that a full reopening of the strait is contingent upon meeting several strict demands.
Iran’s primary conditions for restoring normal traffic include the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, the removal of economic sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and compensation for damages incurred during recent months of conflict. Additionally, Tehran demands the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the region and an end to airstrikes against its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq.
In response, U.S. President Donald Trump has emphasized economic pressure over military action, describing the situation as being ‘like a game of chess.’ Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei countered this comparison, stating that Iranians have proven to be ‘professional chess players.’
The disruption has significant global implications, as the Strait of Hormuz typically carries approximately one-fifth of the world's oil supply. The ongoing blockade and military operations have already led to the diversion of at least 55 merchant vessels and have contributed to volatility in global energy markets.
