U.S. Marine Corps announces plan to expand force by 6,500

The United States Marine Corps has developed a five-year growth plan to increase its end-strength by 4 percent by 2031, with an additional 1 percent growth assessed for the following year. This initiative aims to add more than 6,500 billets across 64 different initiatives to support the service’s “First to Fight” capstone concept and enhance its ability to operate in complex threat environments.

The expansion focuses on aligning trained personnel with modernized capabilities, including robotics, artificial intelligence, precision fires, and autonomous systems. A key strategic shift involves moving away from expensive, highly complex legacy platforms in favor of an enterprise system approach. This strategy prioritizes agility, mass, and the use of “attritable” uncrewed platforms—affordable systems designed to be lost in combat to protect human lives while conducting reconnaissance and delivering precision fires.

To ensure logistical compatibility, the Marine Corps is developing the Ground Systems Enterprise. This ensures that new ground combat vehicles and systems remain within the transport constraints of existing assets such as the C-130, V-22, and CH-53K aircraft, as well as Navy hovercrafts.
