Mexico seeks lower U.S. tariffs on autos and steel
Mexico is actively negotiating with the United States to mitigate trade tensions and secure preferential tariff treatment during the upcoming USMCA review. Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard has proposed that no new tariffs be imposed while discussions are ongoing.
A primary focus of the Mexican delegation is reducing the 25 percent tariff on vehicles manufactured in Mexico, noting that competitors from Japan, South Korea, Germany, and Morocco face a lower 15 percent rate. Ebrard argued that Mexican-made cars incorporate more U.S. components, justifying a request for a discount. Additionally, Mexico is challenging a 50 percent tariff on steel, citing a trade deficit in that sector with the U.S.
In the agricultural sector, the gradual reopening of the U.S. border to live Mexican cattle is set to begin on August 24 via the Douglas, Arizona, port. This process, which will initially focus on cattle from Chihuahua and Sonora due to lower sanitary risks, is expected to moderate the recent surge in processed meat exports that occurred during the 14-month border closure.
