US-Mexico tariff negotiations face conflicting reports on progress

Negotiations between the United States and Mexico regarding tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles are subject to differing accounts from officials. Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has resisted significant reductions to the 25% tariff on Mexican vehicles and the 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, potentially stalling the dialogue.

However, Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard has denied these claims, stating that talks are not stalled and that both governments are engaged in near-daily conversations. Ebrard noted that he has not perceived an opposing stance from Lutnick during their discussions.

Mexico is reportedly seeking to reduce automobile tariffs from 25% to 15%, a move similar to the scheme granted to South Korea. While Mexico has offered concessions, such as suspending its 10% tariff on certain imported parts for five years, officials acknowledge that the negotiation landscape differs from other nations that have committed large-scale investments to the United States.
