US military forces complete withdrawal from Iraq

US military forces have completely withdrawn from Iraq, according to an Iraqi government official. All US combat troops and logistical support personnel have left the country, fulfilling an agreement reached between the US and Iraq in 2024. In recent years, the Pentagon had approximately 2,500 soldiers stationed in the region, with remaining forces located in Erbil, near Baghdad airport, and within the Green Zone.

The withdrawal comes amid heightened regional tensions stemming from the ongoing Iran-Iraq conflict, which has seen hundreds of attacks on US and Kurdish targets. Masrur Barsani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, criticized the move as a ‘shame,’ stating that the region is now vulnerable and lacks an adequate defense system.

To mark the conclusion of the US presence, Iraq has scheduled four official public holidays starting Wednesday, designated as ‘Independence Day.’ While the Islamic State (IS) was declared militarily defeated in 2017 and 2019, security concerns remain due to active IS cells and regional instability.
