US-Iran maritime conflict drives oil prices above $97

Military tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a significant surge in global oil prices. Brent crude rose nearly 8% in a single week, with prices exceeding $97 per barrel, while WTI saw gains of nearly 10%.

U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces struck three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday, including one near Kharg Island. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have targeted three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz for allegedly using unauthorized routes, as well as three U.S. vessels in other areas. One specific report indicates that the Iranian tanker M/T Kylo sank in the Gulf of Oman following a U.S. strike.

The conflict has severely impacted maritime traffic. Data from Kpler shows that an average of only ten cargo ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz daily over the last ten days, the lowest level since May. This disruption to a waterway that historically carries one-fifth of the world's oil supply has heightened fears of long-term energy shortages and increased geopolitical risk premiums in the energy market.
