U.S. military leaders warn Pentagon that Iran conflict is unsustainable
U.S. military leaders have issued formal warnings to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, stating that the ongoing six-month conflict with Iran is unsustainable. According to a classified August 14 report in the Secretary of Defense Orders Book (SDOB), high-ranking commanders from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with regional commanders for Europe, Asia, and Latin America, expressed concerns that prolonged operations could degrade the military's ability to defend the U.S. homeland and respond to other global threats.
The Navy has reported significant strain, with only approximately 25 percent of its destroyer fleet currently available for deployment. Additionally, the intensive use of munitions has reportedly depleted critical stockpiles, including Patriot, ATACMS, and THAAD systems.
Recent military actions have escalated tensions. U.S. Central Command (Centcom) conducted a raid on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz to target Iranian missile launch sites. In response, Iran launched missiles toward U.S. military installations in Jordan and deployed drones against bases in the United Arab Emirates. While the Pentagon has characterized the Larak raid as a necessary action to protect maritime commerce, military leadership remains concerned about the long-term impact on global readiness and resource availability.
