Overview

The conflict between the United States and Iran, which began in late February 2026 with U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear and missile capabilities, has escalated through both economic and military channels.

In late August, the U.S. Treasury Department initiated an ‘Economic D-Day’ campaign, imposing sanctions on nearly 60 entities to isolate the Iranian government. Concurrently, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the U.S. does not rule out military strikes in the Strait of Hormuz or near Iran. Leadership warned that prolonged operations could exhaust capabilities and deplete critical resources, such as Patriot, ATACMS, and Tomahawk systems. The Navy specifically noted that only approximately one-quarter of its destroyers remain immediately available for deployment. While President Donald Trump has dismissed reports of ammunition shortages, military leaders warned that diverting resources impacts readiness in other strategic theaters, including potential threats from China or Russia. In retaliation for U.S. strikes, Iran has launched missiles toward U.S. installations in Jordan and deployed drones against bases in the United Arab Emirates. Although commanders issued a ‘non-concur’ regarding the extension of troop deployments through 2027, they stated they will continue to execute current orders.
