US military loses 25% of MQ-9 Reaper drone fleet in Iran conflict

The United States military has lost approximately 25 percent of its MQ-9 Reaper drone fleet during the conflict with Iran. According to officials cited by The Washington Post, at least 45 drones have been lost, representing a potential taxpayer cost exceeding $1.3 billion.

The MQ-9 Reaper, which costs between $30 million and $50 million per unit depending on its configuration, has been heavily utilized for surveillance and precision strikes near the Strait of Hormuz. The drones' relatively slow speeds and low-altitude flight patterns have made them vulnerable to Iranian military forces and regional proxies in Iraq and Yemen.

Reports indicate that not all losses were due to being shot down; some aircraft crashed following communication failures between operators and the drones. The depletion of these assets, alongside long-term military support for Ukraine, has reportedly constrained U.S. military options. In response to rising costs and depleted stocks, the administration has requested $67 billion from Congress to replenish supplies and offset war-related expenses. The Pentagon has denied reports that its overall weapons stockpiles are running low.
